Textbook Reading & Study Approach

  1. Isolate all bold words with a definition in your own words so that you may actually explain what you are talking about.
  2. Rewrite all theorems and definitions the same way as you go through the chapter or section.
  3. Repeat the same for anything in the side bars of the book’s chapters/sections.
  4. After documenting all of the above, then go back to the start of the chapter or section, and begin to work all the practice problems
  5. Cover up part of it until you can solve it completely. Repeat this until you can solve without referencing the book—that is, as if it were an exam.
  6. Take note of any formulae hidden in the question bank.
  7. DO NOT move on to the next question until you fully understand the first question.
  8. To recap- Remember, a STEM degree is a degree training you to do research! So, do research to solve problems. A scientist comes up with solutions, not excuses!
